HONG KONG.
PRO/988/3.
In the course of the week controversy flared up, not for the first time, between the fire-eating Kuomintang "National Times" and the cautiously independent "Wah Kiu Yat Po" The point at issue was, as before, the "Wah Kiu's" alleged collaboration with the Japanese during the occupation and its present protestations of loyalty to the people rather than to any party.
The Sing Tao Jih Pao advocated the trebling of civil service basic salaries and the abolition of all other allowances (presumably referring to high cost of living allowances).
The Wah Kiu Yat Po took up the question of the exorbitant charges made by the water front coolies for carrying passenger's baggage. A case in which Straits $300 was charged for carrying eight pieces of baggage was cited.
